Here's a mix that managed to put together with the remaining shreds of love in my jaded old soul.

A Retrospective
Hopefully once the holiday season dies down I'll be able to resume writing more. For now however, I've decided to revisit some posts from the last year. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I've enjoyed writing them.
* Breaking up is hard to do.
* In the Jack Realm-
- Jack starts becoming his own person.
- He can find his own way in the dark...
- The Pre-K (K) Takes My Baby Away
- Dear Jack,
- Jack and the Beanstalk
- Dear Jack (II),
* A local tragedy strikes a chord.
* I still try and understand my place in the freakiest hood of all- motherhood.
* On being happy.
* Nobody likes you when you're twenty-threeeeee.
* My Birth Story
* A dear friend of mine becomes a first time father.
* My very first guest post.
* My wheels on the bus spin round and round, and round.
* I say goodbye to someone special.
* Trying to find a place that feels like home again.
And, of course, some of my favorite songs (since I missed yesterday's Music Monday post) that either accompanied a post or just plain rocked my world-
And there you have what the last year looked and sounded.

Friday Fondue (Limited Holy-Crap-I-Actually-Have-A-Friday-Off Edition)

It's been awhile since I've done one of these posts and I was wary of doing another now that I'm working on a different computer (I currently use Colleen's MacBook and being a former Windows PC user I'm still getting the hang of things). But Pinterest I still browse* and music I still listen to, so I figured "why not?!"
*The more you know *insert rainbow*!
*Obsessed with awesome, pretty, swoon-worthy bathrooms lately (or maybe I just need a long soak in a bubble bath).
What would be on my Christmas wishlist? How about these babies-
* A plethora of adorable playsuits.
* Something that appeals to my gramophone fetish AND my i-tunes.
*Ummmm HER HAIR! Gahhhh gorgeous. I'm trying to resist running to the store for my trusty red dye.
* Always shoes, always.
* I adore Ryan's tales of his relationship with his lovely wife Cole. Such a hilarious and awesome couple.
* This Thanksgiving my roommates and I will be holding a vegan feast of friends before the actual holiday (Colleen has dubbed it "Thanksliving", yes, she is a vegan AND a punster). I'll be testing out my vegan cooking skills again by making vegan stuffing. I'll also be blogging the event, naturally.
Music Of The Week-
* I'm addicted to this song and it's video- "Jackson" by Stone Jack Jones.
* A cover of one of my favorite songs- "Heroes" covered by Magnetic Fields
* The always etherial Beach House with "I Don't Care For The Winter Sun".
* I never get sick of Bob- "Queen Jane Approximately" by Bob Dylan
* "Message To Pretty" by Love
* "The Radio's Hot Sun" by Handsome Furs
And a Happy Friday to you all!
*If you want to see what else I have pinned to walls, you can check me out on Pinterest here.

Friday Fondue

I wish I were writing as much as I have "ideas to write down". By the end of the day sleep is my siren luring me to the bottom of the ocean. The lack of posts here has got me down, the lack of vegetarian strictness in my diet gives me guilt and I'm fairly certain my caffeine to water ratio is a bit out of balance. But I figure if I haven't completely broken down yet, something is working. So I'll work it for now.
In the meantime...links!
* Chelsea gave birth to a lovely little girl. Check her out and read her birth story here!
* Cool site for lunchbox ideas. I am allllll over this!
* Love, love, love!
* I'll never look at rogue cinder blocks as worthless again! I want to do this!
* Great post over at A Cup Of Jo on how to talk to little girls. I can't wait to try it!
* Want to make.
* I think this is my favorite maternity pic ever! It's so playful and doesn't scream just maternity.
* Dream loft.
* Tattoo lust! I've been wanting to get a Ferdinand the Bull tattoo for awhile. It was my favorite book as a kid and Ferdinand reminds me of Jack.
* Thanking about saving up and splurging on a pair of proper, classic flats (sick of replacing them every six months or so, quality over quantity!)- these two are the top contenders.
* This article cracked me up (although pretty much everything at This Recording tickles my fancy on the regular).
Music Of The Week
* "Foolin'" by Devendra Banhart (though probably NSFW, it still cures my road rage, funk moods...I also have a wicked crush on Devendra).
* "Oh My God" by Cults. Saw them at Congress last Saturday and it was one of the more fun shows I've been to so far this year (Fitz and the Tantrums would have been a good one but my getting nauseous and claustrophobic inhibited my good time) and singer Madeline Follin was a sweetheart. And...
* "Resolution Of One" by Guards...who opened for Cults and made me swoon like a teenager.
* "Zebra" by Beach House
* "Down Boy" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Friday Fondue- Saturday Edition

When you work weekends your whole concept of the rest of the week sort of goes completely out of whack. My "weekends", as of late, have been moved to Wednesday and Thursdays so Fridays and Saturdays have lost their shiny, happy luster since they've basically been my Monday and Tuesday. Don't ask me for the date, you'll be let down or kind of amused as you watch my face work out the math in my head.
But! Here are some links-
* Rebecca Woolf turns thirty and writes a damn beautiful post about it, naturally.
* Animals Being Dicks
* Shoe lust.
* In love with Audrey Pongracz's "That's why the call them crushes" painting (I'm a big lover of John Hughes movies).
* This would be an awesome and hilarious gift for a tea loving friend.
* One crazy adorable shop!
* I think Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are giving girls someone to look up to.
* Oh, hi! I'll take all of these outfits for my future daughter, thanks!
* I'm on the hunt for a top like this (I live in Tucson, I should be able to find one like this for way less than $168.00. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a bunch on the cheap when we were in Ixtapa. Idiot.)
* Dream kitchen.
* Great, healthy and delicious recipe for avocado quinoa tacos.
* Adoring this baby quilt (my mother-in-law is a master quilter so maybe I can get her to try this pattern with Jack's old baby t-shirts since I'm hopeless at all things crafty and/or domestic. I'm a hell of a notebook doodler though!).
* The Evolution Of The Geek. Which geek are you?
Music Of The Week (I'm REALLY obsessed with these ones this week!)
"The Park" by Secret Cities
"Cannons" by Little Scream
"Everyday" by Vetiver
"When They Fight They Fight" by The Generationals
And lastly, this is NSFW. Not outright vulgar but very suggestive and quite possibly the sexiest video and song I've seen/heard in a long time-
"The Pornographer" by Parenthetical Girls
Here's hoping you all have a fantastic weekend and a wonderful Father's Day. May the men who gave us children, raised us up from children, remain a child at heart or a memory that will never leave your own have a special day. Love to you all.

Happy Listening!

The Doors and Me
Through years of casual observation, I’ve noticed that friends of mine either completely love or flat-out loathe The Doors. Doors front man Jim Morrison tends to be described as either “deity” or “buffoon,” depending on the person's mouth these words are falling out of, though not exclusively from each camp. I happen to like them, The Doors. Him. Jim.
It was probably my junior year in high school when I, for a lack of a better word, opened myself up to The Doors. The boys I crushed on usually talked about them in the midst of deep discussions of classic rock album catalogs, and since they rarely failed me in recommending music, I went to the local Target and picked up the two-disc Legacy compilation, a perfect Doors starter kit.
I went home and drew a bath, as was my usual nightly ritual, and put on Disc One in my bathroom-appointed CD player. The Doors’ first single, “Break On Through (To the Other Side),” off their self-titled debut album, poured from those tiny speakers, reverberating across the bathroom tiles.
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
By the time "The End" came on, my bathwater had turned cold. I laid there mesmerized, unaware of my pruning violet fingertips or my pending homework. Unaware of the day, now almost over; of my little brothers or my parents; I was now looking well beyond those boys who recommended the music to me in the first place. I was a slate wiped clean, and one thing filled it back up- sexuality.
I know it's a cliché to wax on about how Jim Morrison was sex poured into leather pants, bellowing on about Native American Shaman and lizards, but it was the mix of dark and light that pulled me in. He was Dark and Mysterious, yes, but underneath it was a man dying for something sacred, as was I.

My makeshift bathroom séance was not the first time I’d heard of The Doors. Through my parents I had cultivated a love of classic rock in my early years. My dad would fill the house with Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd and, sometimes, even Neil Diamond. I remember my mother getting a wild hair up her ass one night and hijacking me from my room because she HAD to go pick up a copy of an Ozzy Osbourne album she realized she’d lost years ago. And so we drove home singing, riding the metaphorical "Crazy Train," and feeling, well, like a couple of wild and crazy broads. They had their jams, but The Doors were my thing. My parent's weren't that big on ‘em—they knew songs, but never bought any of their stuff. Meanwhile, my girlfriends mostly rejected The Doors right off the bat in favor of Dashboard Confessional (another post entirely) and music in the same vein. Again, that ‘60s L.A. foursome remained my thing.

The Doors’ music relaxes me in a way I struggle to put into words. It pulls out my inhibitions and replaces them with reckless abandon. I slip into a different skin entirely. Suddenly I’m a dog with my head sticking out of the car window. I’m jumping into the deep end with both feet, on a moonlight drive. And yes, I am ready and willing, onto the next Whiskey bar.
About a year ago, while celebrating a friend’s birthday, enough cocktails drove the conversation from giddy laughter into talk of strippers and strip clubs. I’d never been to one. "You know what we SHOULD do...."
As we walked into our designated gentleman’s club, the lighting instantly threw me off. Despite the half-naked entertainers working the club, I felt even more uncomfortable within my own clothed skin. I knew what the majority of the patrons were there for, but my intentions were more in the spirit of fun and games, like a reverse-bachelorette party. I felt a little weird knowing that by being there I was wasting these girls' time, as they were earning a living and I was merely taking up precious real estate, sipping my Midori Sours. I felt uptight and weird. Then my friend decided she was going to buy me a dance.
"Nooooo. No way. No. No. Nah uh. No."
"Yes. Just one. You have to. This is probably your first and only time here. I've had one before. They're fun!"
"No. Maybe. One more drink… And if I see a girl I like/respect/can talk to. Maaaaybe."
I texted Greg in various stages of my intoxication and regaled him with stories of who I saw and what could happen."
"Do it!"
"You're just saying that because you're a guy."
"Well, don't do it if you're uncomfortable. But you ARE at a strip club. Trust your instincts."
"Fine.”
I sat back down and waited for The Right Moment, noting the paying customers around me so I’d know what to do with my body language. Watching the dancers to see where mentally they were at. Normally I’d be much too emotionally sensitive to be in a strip club, but there I was. The hours passed; my Lap Dance Window closing. I would go down as a prudish square, on this the day of my friend’s birthday. And then....
A song.
And a girl. A lithe, blue-eyed blonde with all the tenacity in the world. A twenty was exchanged and I got my first and last lap dance. I tried to focus on just the song, and despite the fact that I was totally out of my element, at some point, it WAS fun. I felt like girl, a woman, in the oddest way. She may not have been Dark and Mysterious, but in a flurry of body glitter, distorted guitars and a faux-Shaman warning of Mister Mojo Rising, I broke on through.
Just the way Jim would've wanted it.

And here's a few of my favorite Doors tunes. Bathtub not required.

Friday Fondue
Well, it's about time I do another one of these. Generally they're good placeholders for when I'm too tired and uninspired to write anything of substance. Which is where I'm at, at the moment.
Tonight my friend Colleen is walking in a fashion show downtown so I'll be going down there to cheer on her bad self and support local charities. And maybe have a margarita while I'm at it. Fashion+cocktails+good causes= a pretty decent night to me! But before that, here's what I've been diggin' this week.
Spanish Moss has been hitting all the right buttons on my "yes, please" switchboard. You can find their blog here and their store here. But my favorite items, if I had to narrow them down would have to be- this, this, this (I desperately need to find a kimono for those lazy Sunday mornings) and THIS!
I've been finding a lot of badass couches online lately. This one is up there on my favorites (although the price tag is not).
I love that Helena Bonham Carter stays true to herself despite the critics.
This would be ADORABLE in a little girls room.
I'm probably really late with this, my favorite clothing haunt has its own blog!
Going to have to make this soon!
The songs I've had on repeat for the last couple days? This one, because it's painfully gorgeous. This one, because I hadn't heard it in years but it randomly popped into my head the other day and this one, because I'm going to put it on a cd for Jack to give to him at some point.
Talk about taking it to the next level with grocery shopping!
One in every color, yes?
I want to put this in Jack's room.
The cutest clock I've ever seen.
I LOVE this apartment.
Need to laugh?
And lastly, my favorite. Because who doesn't like wino babies (thanks James!).
And I finally got to touching up my roots!

Wishing you all a happy weekend!

Valentine's Day
I was going to write a legit post on Valentine's Day, relationships, etc, but I quickly realized it was entering territory I'm not sure I have the wherewithal to handle at the moment. When it comes to the oft-debated holiday, I've always been one of those girls who’s a skeptic, I'd even venture to say “pessimist.” I tend to walk around all day in a Janeane Garofalo-esque manner, lamenting the commercialization of love and expectations, while simultaneously falling prey to those of my own. Every year I snicker at ring commercials that promise Undying Love in a princess cut and platinum setting. I point out the fact that flowers are merely plant genitals, and honestly, I've never been a huge fan of chocolate. So Valentine's Day, at least the one made around mall-based jewelry sales and rose-strewn paths, has never been my bag. But love, on the other hand...
Instead of being a hater this year, I'm forcing myself to see the light of this day and what it really means, stripped down to its core. It's OK to love. It's OK to tear down your own walls to let people in.
So this year I'm celebrating in a different way—I'm making everyone my Valentine. I'm making cards for my mother with Jack; looking at pictures of my grandparents when they were young and fearless; watching movies and laughing; and, above all else, letting the world in today. And since this blog—this tiny little section of my brain on display—has been so dear to me, since YOU, yes YOU loyal readers have been so dear to me, I've decided to make you a love-themed music mix.
Because deep down, I really am a hopeless, cheese-ball romantic. In a way all my own.

Oh, and here are some of those pictures of my grandparents that made my heart punch drunk.-

And my own parents back in the 80's, when my mother's hair aspirations were questionable-

Happy Valentine's Day to you all!

30 Day Dare+Blue Valentine+Whatever Else I Can Squeeze Out Of My Lame Brain
First! Let's get some pictures out of the way. This time I decided to do one of those "Inside My Bag" things-

I found these little guys at Toys-R-Us one day and had to get them because they were so cute. My elephant is missing his trunk though. I had names for all three but I can't recall them at the moment.

A bracelet gift from a friend. You never know when you have to just stop and accessorize.

I mostly got these Altoids because I liked the green, antique-y tin. Aaaand maybe so I could have a grasshopper minus the alcohol midday.

Field notes (fine tip Sharpies are my writing tool of choice, good for both writing and doodling).

Sunglasses, comb for keeping the bangs on point, wallet and junk pouch (full of various glosses, mints, bobby pins, etc).

Sunglasses again, phone, keys.

My-Going-Out-Bad-Habit (I occasionally smoke while I drink when out, though I haven't in awhile. Yes scoff now!) and lotion, because dry hands can really fuck my day up!

Mix CD for errand running (I'm a compulsive mix maker) and a CD from a band I saw a couple weeks ago.

Some lipstick I got from another friend. I guess Revlon has this line of vintage inspired shades and packaging that really does lend a darling feeling to the inside of your bag.

And finally, the segue into the next part of this post...
Saw Blue Valentine last night and, well, it was good. I think I would have been more blown away if the fights in it hadn't hit so close to home. I actually found myself wincing at certain parts because the dialog was just so real and accurate. I think the ending got me the most. That's all I'll say for now since I don't want to spoil it. But, definitely see it.
This post didn't exactly turn out the honor student I envisioned. I think it's because my vision is getting a little wonky. I'm so tired. Six hours of sleep in three days and a toddler whose energy level resembles the Tasmanian Devil will do that to you.
I'll try again tomorrow. In the meantime, here's some La Blogotheque videos that made my evening. If you have low tolerance for beauty than you shouldn't watch them though.
And!
And there you have it. Off to bed I go!

30 Day Dare- Month 2- A Picture is worth a thousand posts
The vegan challenge went off without a hitch and I'm happy to say that I'll be maintaining a vegetarian/as-vegan-as-I-can lifestyle. I didn't anticipate a simple idea derived out of writers block to change me the way it has thus far. I'm still not really done with the vegan challenge. I want to post all my favorite recipes, do a cooking show type thing with Colleen (my vegan guidance counselor) and do a review of my favorite vegan products. So I haven't given the vegan challenge a proper "farewell" because, well, I'm not quite ready to just yet.
Now! Since it's the start of a new month, it is the start of a new challenge. At first I was going to do 30 days of running or 30 days of sexercise, but what I decided on was 30 days of pictures. I've wanted to get better at taking them so I figured "why not now?!" This also correlated with a city review I've been meaning to do for awhile (my favorite spots in Tucson, restaurants, music venues, clothing stores, etc).
So without further adieu-
Day 1-2 (got a bit of late start after realizing last night around 11 p.m. that it was the 1st of the month)
My morning-

AND! Since my morning would be absolutely unstartable (like that word? I just made it up.) Here's the music that made my heart swell large enough to swallow the day-

The Favorites prt. 2
In my last "Favorites" playlist I was going to explain the meanings (some have more than others, some just have lyrics that resonated) to me behind each song but as you can imagine, it became a bit drawn out. In the end I was kind of bummed that I didn't just go for it, wax nostalgic and bear little pieces of my soul through song, so this time I am! Here's "The Favorites Part 2" (with commentary by yours truly)-

1. "The Sun Was High, So Was I" by Best Coast- I just think this is what a crush sounds like. It is waking up with the sun on your face and going through your day with one person in mind the whole time. It also really makes me want to sit at the beach and breathe in that salty air.
2. "Dry The Rain" by The Beta Band- One day I came home from what I assumed was "the worst day ever" (although I have these about once or twice a month, so take that with a grain of salt) and I was just...done. I threw myself on my bed ready to marathon cry like a champ and when I turned up my c.d. player this song came on. By the time Steve Mason came through with "if there's something inside that you want to say/
Say it out loud/it'll be okay/I will be your light/I will be your light/I will be your light/I will be your light", the tears stopped. I picked myself up off my bed with those lines running on repeat in my head and walked to Eegee's for a sandwich and suddenly the world was back on it's axis. To this day, if I need an instant pick me up I flick on this song.
3."A New England" by Billy Bragg- My dear friend and fellow music junkie/pusher Tyler put this on a mix for me about a year or two back and I've been in love with it ever since. I love the rawness and echo of the guitar and his voice. It sounds like he's playing to an empty auditorium and you're the lucky sucker who just happened to walk by. The lyrics are awesome too- "I saw two shooting stars last night/I wished on them but they were only satellites/ Is it wrong to wish on space hardware/I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care."
4. "At The Bottom Of Everything" by Bright Eyes- I was a Bright Eyes FIEND in high school. I had every c.d., knew every lyric. But this song, I think, can speak to everybody. Conor Oberst still stands out as one of the best songwriters of our generation and I'll forever love him for his words.
5. "Lovers Spit" by Broken Social Scene- Not much to say about this one. It just feels like a wave washing over my body every time I hear it.
6. "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" by Broken Social Scene- It's all in the title. This song takes all the feelings of a crush, of adolescence and growing up and mixes them into an ear orgasm. When I listened to this song for the first time I went out and bought "The Virgin Suicides" (Jeffrey Eugenides) and read it cover to cover. My heart felt like it was going to break.
7. "Robbers" by Cold War Kids- This reminds me of walking downtown on an empty weekday afternoon for some reason. As a result, I listen to it often.
8. "Bad Girl" by Devendra Banhart- If you've been reading for the last couple months it's no secret that I'm bloody obsessed with this man and the music he makes. The thing that sticks out in this to me is the almost self-mocking "wah wah wah wah". It's totally endearing and heartbreaking in equal measure and the "mama I ain't waiting/I ain't waiting/but I'm still holding on"? My chest almost seizes up every time I hear it. His voice is absolute perfection and he uses it with a beautiful conviction that resonates almost too loudly.
9. "Gloria" by The Doors- If you're a Doors fan you're either damned if you do, damned if you don't when you talk to people about them. We'll I do. Or at least I did. Jim Morrison awakened a sexual energy at 17 that I didn't know I had. He took the wallflower and provoked her enough to be the one who calls the shots. And in this song, well, it's quite obvious that he does the same with others as well. That build up and explode, that was teenage erotica at it's finest.
10. "The Old Days" by Dr. Dog- If those keys at the beginning don't pull you in instantly I don't know you.
11. "Opus 23" by Dustin O'Halloran- The beauty I find in this song is the simplicity. There is no pretense, just a beautiful and haunting piece of music.
12. "Rose Parade" by Elliott Smith- When we were trying to figure out what to name Jack, "Elliott" almost won for his middle name ("Lee" won in the end, it's a tribute to Greg's family, fine by me!). I pretended the idea didn't derive out of my love for Smith and T.S. Eliot...but I'm a damn liar. It totally would have, for good reason.
13. "Orange Blossom Special" by Johnny Cash- Why wouldn't Cash be on here?
14. "It Ain't Me Babe" by Johnny Cash and June Carter- If you don't sing along to the "nah nah no" part you aren't listening to this song properly.
15. "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin- Listening to this, on top of a mountain in the rain, on my 18th birthday, was, to put it simply- a moment.

And there you have it. Part 2. I'll be working on these when I can't find anything else to write (sometimes that happens...). Here's hoping you don't get sick of them!

Oh, look another music post...
I was originally going to give myself a pedicure tonight, a sort of reward for all that cooking and doing about 2 hours worth of ironing (my most loathed of chores) today...but then I got distracted by my i-tunes. So I decided "why not post my FAVOURITE, OVER THE MOON, CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT, ALL TIME TOP, OVERUSE CAPS LOCK UNTIL BORDERLINE OBNOXIOUS, CRAZY WITH THE CHEESE WIZ, IF MY SOUL WAS A PIÑATA AND YOU BEAT IT WITH A STICK THIS IS WHAT WOULD FALL OUT songs. There will be more to follow. Here's one-

Oh! And I also came across this and the joy was almost too great (and I'm not one for Pixies covers!)-
More to come...

Moooosica! Musica!
I was going to post an update about the 30 Day Dare, but it's kind of mundane. Still vegan, still loving it. That's about all there is to update on. I'll be ending this dare with my favorite recipes, an interview with the people who have helped guide me along this challenge and their thoughts on it and I'll be preparing a three course vegan meal for the in-laws (which will be documented here of course!). Since starting the challenge and realizing how well my body has responded to it, I've decided that after it is over I'll be going vegetarian completely, with a vegan lean. This may or may not be due to my viewing "Earthlings". I'd recommended it but it definitely isn't for the weak of stomach nor for those who really want to see what's going on in our meat, fur, pet industries. I cried and had to cover my eyes multiple times and while it was almost torturous to watch, I'm glad I did because it gave more meaning to this challenge and catapulted me into really thinking about my ethics.
Jeez, I guess that's an update right there right?!
Anyway, I mostly just wanted to post some songs I've been obsessed with for the last couple days. So here you go-
Jack White's lovely wife seems to be just as talented as her counterpart (and reminds me that I need to touch up my roots)-
For those of you who enjoy Natalie Portman being cute and odd videos (I regularly shake my groove thing to this while cooking)-
Because Iggy Pop never gets old to me.
I never tire of hearing these Swedish (there must be something in their genes that allows them to make awesome music)lads and lasses-
And since I was coming up short, I asked for help from my guidance counselor in all things music, James over at TucsonScene (for you locals or future Tucson explorers). Here you have "The Last of the International Fey Boys"-
So there you have it! Tonight I'll be getting cozy at one of my favorite haunts to see The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger (Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl) which sounds like-
So I'm quite jazzed. Here's hoping you all a lovely and musical weekend!

Oh la la! An award and Friday Fondue...
First, the lovely Mrs. Eva at Lovers in a Dangerous Time, gave me a "Stylish Blogger Award"! Thanks Eva! Although I received this award in a slouchy sweater and no pants (underwear though! it's something!)...the irony is not wasted on me.

As these things tend to go, now I must divulge 7 random things about myself and pick some other stylish bloggers to pass this award on to.
7 Things-
1. I have had almost every type of pet, from childhood to now. I wanted to be a veterinarian so I figured I should learn how take care of animals from the scaled to the furred. I've had everything from chinchillas to iguanas (which were actually one of my favorites, after it would rain I'd take them out and let them swim in puddles and climb little trees). Each and every one has enriched my life. I strongly believe that animals have a therapeutic aspect to them (there's a reason they have therapy dogs and cats at children's hospitals and retirement homes).
2. If I could wear boots everyday I would.
3. I have a thing for vintage hats. It started with this deep purple velvet one that has pearl, sequin and rhinestone embellishment on the top. It's a stunning hat and I've only worn it out once (people didn't "get it"). But I keep her (yes, it's a her) around for constant inspiration. I need to get back to collecting them.
4. I've been having a longstanding love affair with burlesque (before that god awful, inaccurate movie came out). It has changed me in so many ways for the better. I strongly recommend taking a burlesque class if you're feeling self conscious. I can not begin to describe the gratitude I have for it.
5. There is a chance (even if it's slight) that Greg could be transfered to either California or Germany for his job. I have little daydreams of blogging from my German apartment, eating apple strudel. But I'd miss Tucson too hard.
6. I hate the sound of sneezing. I don't know what it is but every time somebody next to me sneezes really loud I get anxiety. I feel like an asshole about this weird aversion since they can't help it. I keep it to myself mostly while my teeth clench in my head.
7. Sometimes I make this noise that sounds like an old gramophone, for fun. It sounds like the into to "Chicago". I pretend I'm a flapper. Greg laughs at me.
Now, I must pick 15 bloggers to pass this along to.
1. Cole, Ryan's gorgeous wife over at Pacing The Panic Room.
2. Mrs. Woolf, of course (I don't expect these bloggers to participate in this, they're likely too busy, probably being stylish and awesome).
3. Keiko Lynn
4. The lovely, newly pregnant with numero two and still rockin' Chelsea.
5. Emery, who hosts seasonal Fashion Weeks, and inspires us all to get gussied up and has played cupid to many of us in discovering new blog friends.
6. Emilie and Erin over at Preen, who I happen to be lucky enough to live in the same city with. They own the most adorable vintage shop in Tucson.
7. No Model Lady, though I think she could be one!
8. Jess over at The doe or the deer.
9. Samantha Moeller, founder of the former Missbehave Magazine and badass mom with style.
10. Marcella (and the insanely adorable Pella) over at Mar & the Peej.
11. The crazy lovely Adriana (and her heartbreakin' Hendrix) at Just By Living.
12. Jasmin at Vintage Vandalizm. Does this girl know how to bring sexy back or what?! So envious of her hair.
13. Blogger girl crush, Hannah Metz at Hannah and Landon.
14. Molly started her very own style blog awhile ago! Check it out here.
15. Bebe at Fated To Be Hated.
There you have it! Thanks again Eva!
Also, since I haven't done my Friday Fondue shtick in a bit here's some things that sparked my interest via the interweb.
1. A funny, all too familiar tutorial via McSweeney's.
2. One adorable Tumblr.
3. Cannot wait to get addicted to this hilarious new show.
4. Going to make these this weekend!
5. Crazy adorable clothes here, here, here, and here.
6. Songs I've been digging as of late- Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear, Let's Go Surfing by The Drums (thanks James! James happens to be Tucson's resident music connoissuer and I find myself lucky that he shares these little gems with this amateur. You can read his blog here.), First Song for B by Devendra Banhart (absolutely GORGEOUS song, I even took my years mantra from it) and I Want The World To Stop by Belle and Sebastian.
7. A totally NSFW video that is hilarious, ladies and gentlemen, Streak Fail.
Well, I think I've pretty much linked this post to death. Hope you all have wonderful weekend. Kiss your babies, eat good food, watch a movie and spoon your spouse/boyfriends/lovers/people of affection, a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down the pants.
Amanda OUT!

Of Jacks and kings and queens
"Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
-Lewis Carroll
Lately Jack has been alien to me. He has been talking to us more in somewhat coherent mini-sentences. He asks for food and straps his shoes by himself, brushing my hand away in what I hope is not an omen into his future teens. He gets mad and frustrated in a way that speaks more to me now than a mere bought of irrational broken banana hysteria. He knows when he's being fucked over, when I'm being unavailable. And he knows how to push the right buttons to flip it instantly upside down. He sings songs in the car so loudly and so exactly on cue with whoever is singing it, it has become a road hazard due to an almost overwhelming desire to turn around and watch him and cry. At my boy. My boy. MY boy with his mouth wide open singing out, releasing an imaginary world that I can not see. Cannot fathom.
I try to imagine him as an 8 year old, a 17 year old, a 25 year old. I wonder what he'll wish for when he lays in bed at night. What his first girlfriend will write to him in teenage love notes. What he'll want to be when he grows up.
"He'll be a musician" I say, all the time. And why not? He's my son. The same bean that grew in me while I rattled the shell that separated us for nine months with songs from my headphones.
"Hello Jack. Your mother is feeling melancholy today. Here's a song to brighten up your day. Also, enjoy the coconut curry shrimp I'm sending your way in 15 minutes." I'd tell him. Hoping that my voice would find its way to him in between 60's pop songs and music from the 80's passed down from his grandmother and then, with a slight embarrassment, from me.
"He'll be an actor or a comedian" I say, with the adoration for the minuscule only a mother possesses. The tiniest charismatic smirk, the most expressive utterances of nonsense.
"Purple cats! Airplanes are in the sky! Those leaves are indeed brown and have holes! You're a genius! Can I have your autograph tattooed into my heart please?!"
How can somebody love somebody they've known forever but don't know at all?
I still haven't wrapped my head around parenthood. Every time I think I have I end up laughing at myself, shaking my head in embarrassment for thinking I knew everything all along. Thinking I know how he'll be tomorrow or next month or 25 years from now.
I know nothing and in a way I'm glad. He keeps me on my toes that way. Keeps me changing to catch up with him. Keeps me pondering what I really want out of life. Keeps my mind open and my heart pounding with purpose.
"Whatever he'll be, he'll be him which is the best thing to be anyway" I say.
It seems he keeps on teaching me as well...

*Yes, he has a mustache tattooed (temporarily) on his face. He's a gentleman of course!

Also!
Today my ipod got me through my workout (my ipod gets me through A LOT though, so I don't know if that's saying enough anymore) and I figured I'd post some of what pumps me up and keeps me going when I'd soooooo much rather be eating cheesecake.
